In our exclusive live webinar "CBAM in the future: Possible calculation methods and extension of the product obligation" with Kendra Benkendorf, CBAM expert at Tacto, we explain how you can efficiently integrate CBAM into your supply chain strategy.

CBAM concerns goods originating in third countries that are imported into the customs territory of the EU. It currently covers sectors such as steel, aluminium, hydrogen, cement, electricity and fertilizers. The aim is to prevent the relocation of CO2-intensive production to countries with less stringent climate regulations and to create fair competitive conditions between EU producers and importers. In future, companies affected by CBAM will have to record and report the actual CO2 emissions of their imported goods. This requires close cooperation with suppliers and the implementation of effective calculation methods for CO2 emissions.

At present, around 95% of companies affected by CBAM have relied on standard stocks. This will no longer be possible in future. From the fourth quarter of 2024, CBAM reports must be submitted with real data from suppliers, whereby default values may only be used for 20% of the calculations for complex goods.

Many SMEs are facing the challenge of implementing these new requirements. If companies affected by CBAM do not prepare for the provision of real values in cooperation with their suppliers, there could be serious consequences from 2026: CBAM goods can no longer be imported, there is a risk of fines for non-compliance with reporting obligations, and competitiveness could be weakened by the need to develop alternative suppliers.

Concrete applications and fields of use of CBAM in purchasing

1. verification of the CBAM impact: Tacto supports the identification of affected products based on customs tariff numbers and countries of origin.

2. supplier inquiry and training: Inquiry of relevant CO2 data from suppliers and implementation of training for correct emissions calculation.

3. support with calculation methods: Tacto offers help with the application of various methods such as the calculation method, measurement method or mass balance method.

4. creation of the CBAM report: generation of the report in XML form from the supplier details and any remaining default values.

5. reporting: assistance with registration in the CBAM transitional register and uploading the final report.

Outlook

Tacto offers a future-oriented solution for the integration of CBAM into the supply chain strategy of medium-sized companies. By using a central platform, companies can not only increase their efficiency and minimize compliance risks, but also react flexibly to future regulatory changes. The solution makes it possible to continuously optimize CBAM processes while focusing on core competencies.
